STUNNING SLOAN

The wines of Stuart Sloan are, in a word, spectacular. With aromas of melted licorice, mocha, blackberry, cassis, barbecue spice, and sweet chocolate, these are reference point wines that are the hallmark of the very best that California can be.

Here’s what critic Robert Parker has to say about this great winery:

“Talk about coming out with a Big Bang! Stuart Sloan, the Seattlebusinessman, has hit both gold and home runs with his extraordinary vineyard perched high on a hill above the renowned restaurant/hotel complex of Auberge du Soleil. A 60-acre estate only partially planted in vines, with David Abreu handling the viticulture and Martha Levy(wife of Harlan Estates’ Bob Levy) making the wine, this is as impressive a new operation as I have ever witnessed.”

Includes:

One bottle of 2003 Sloan Cabernet Sauvignon

One bottle of 2004 Sloan Cabernet Sauvignon

Donated by:

Jane M. Mitchell

Winning Bid: $1,400

A great introduction to Bond’s style is Matriarch, a beautifully made wine with wonderfully sweet notes of smoke, lead pencil shavings, black cherries, and cassis, made in an opulent textural style with impressive concentration, low acidity, and silky tannin. It possesses ripe and super lush layers of seductive black cherry, blackberry, plum and spice, with a smooth texture and ripe, mouth-coating tannins accented by a hint of melted chocolate.

This is really sexy juice folks and the name is Bond . . . just Bond.

A FLEURY ESTATE WINERY SPECTACULAR

Here’s a rare opportunity to hobnob with the Napa Valley in-crowd. Spend two nights and three days at Fleury Estate Winery’s lovely cottage house, with its lavender garden and Napa Valley charm, taste their stunning range of wines and take home three spectacular bottles to boot.

“We allow the grapes to take center stage in every barrel, bottle and glass of our wines,” says Brian Fleury, and his boutique winery reflects that approach. A successful Bay Area businessman who brought his family to the Napa Valley ten years ago, he turned his passion for collecting fine wine into a passion for making it. Fleury Estate Winery now owns 50 acres spanning three vineyards in three appellations and at three elevations: Rutherford, St. Helena and Howell Mountain. Its small Rutherford facility produces and sells out of 3,000 cases a year by winery sales only, without the use of distributors.

Brian is a self-taught wine maker who learned the craft by hiring various mentors and working alongside them. Clearly, he’s learned well, since his wines are in such great demand.

Includes:

• A 3 day and 2 night stay at the 4 bedroom / 2 bathroom Fleury Estate Winery Vineyard House

• Private tour and tasting

• One Three-Liter bottle each of 2004, 2005 and 2006 Lauren Bryce Cabernet Sauvignon

THE STUNNING 2005 MARGAUX

Of the magnificent 2005 Margaux, Michael Troise wrote: “When I asked Paul Pontailler, proprietor of Château Margaux, how he thought his 2005 would rank alongside the Margaux immortals, he said that in his lifetime, he had never experienced a wine like it and that it would stand easily with the three other vintages he considered the best he’d seen at Margaux, 1996, 2000 and 2003.” When pressed further to have to choose one of the four vintages from which to take a single bottle into the future, he (coyly) said “... it’s so hard, I don’t know, but maybe the 2005. By anyone’s standards it is a phenomenal young wine with unimaginable potential. It is a lush, velvety and extremely dense, an almost magical elixir of Château Margaux. Super-fresh red and blackberries burst in the mouth with that almost crunchy tang I alluded to earlier, finishing forever with a palatecoating fruit compote and toffee veneer.

This is Grace Kelly wearing Valenciennes lace and a diamond tiara. It literally took my breath away, it was that stunning.”

BEAUTY AND BRAINS . . .AND TALENT

You’ve seen her picture and you’ve read about both her and her wines in every wine publication you can imagine. We’re talking about Ann Colgin of course. Well, thanks to the efforts of Chairman Ted Mandes, the Kravis Center has been very fortunate to have received an extraordinarily generous gift from Ann, a special edition box containing each of her wines from the great 2005 vintage.

Robert Parker said of this stunning winery “Colgin is one of the reference points for just what heights mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon,Bordeaux varietals, and more recently, Syrah, can achieve in Napa Valley. This beautiful estate and winery overlooking Lake Hennessey is owned by Joe Wender and his wife, Ann Colgin (equally renowned for her auctioneering skills), who are assisted by David Abreu, the well-known Bordeaux wine consultant, Dr. Alain Raynaud, and Allison Tauziet, who has skillfully replaced the brilliant Mark Aubert.”

Ladies and gentlemen, these are among the greatest wines produced in California today . . . and believe us when we say that the whole world knows it too.

AN INCREDIBLE BORDEAUX TASTING

Invite a few of your very best friends over for dinner one night and have the most incredible Bordeaux party of your life. Just take a look at these magnificent wines, two of which have received unbelievable reviews from Robert Parker (below), the 1982 Lafite and 1982 Mouton. We’re not talking Yellow Tail here so please make sure your lucky guests know what they’re lucky enough to experience.

“The 1982 Lafite possesses a dark, dense ruby/purple color with only a subtle lightening at the rim. Spectacular aromatics offer jammy cherry and black fruits intertwined with lead pencil, mineral, and smoky wood scents. Powerful for a Lafite, this wine unfolds to reveal extraordinary richness, purity, and overall symmetry in addition to stunning flavor depth and persistence. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. Plenty of tannin remains, and the wine displays a vibrancy and youthfulness that belie its 18 years of age. The modern day equivalent of Lafite-Rothschild’s immortal 1959, the 1982 will enjoy another 30-70 years of life. An amazing achievement!”

“This wine (1982 Mouton) remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The crème de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082!”

Includes one bottle each of:

1989 Château Cheval Blanc

1990 Château La Dominique

1994 Château Clinet

1982 Château Lafite Rothschild

1996 Château Monbousquet

1985 Château Margaux

1982 Château Mouton Rothschild

1995 Château Troplong Mondot

1982 Château Calon-Ségur

A FULL CASE OF FLEURY ESTATE 2008 PINOT NOIR

Here’s what The Napa Wine Project had to say about the incredible Fleury Estate Winery:

“Fleury Estate Winery is an appointment only winery for serious wine enthusiasts and collectors, located mere minutes from the sometimes insanely busy “wine strip” off of Highway 29. There is no sign directing one to this winery from the main highway – just a small copper colored sign above their mailbox. The owner Brian Fleury started this winery from the ground up in the mid 1990s – almost everything is done by Brian or his wife. He was a successful San Francisco Bay area businessman who passionately collected fine wine. There is a big difference between collecting fine wine and taking the jump into owning a winery and vineyards. Many businessmen from other fields who become winery owners often play a “background” role. Not so with Brian. He is completely self taught – he hired a number of vintners and wine educators, worked alongside them and now is the full time winemaker for Fleury Estate. This is truly a passion and a family business; the tasting is usually with Brian himself. Fleury owns 50 acres spread over three vineyards in three Napa appellations – Rutherford, St. Helena and Howell Mountain.

Their Pinot Noir is tops, we tried the 2006 vintage – it is one of the nicer ones we’ve tasted on this project and the vineyards for this are not even in the cooler Carneros district!”

THE ONE AND ONLY

In the rarefied air of world class wines, the legendary Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the Holy Grail, period. The bouquet of its wines engulfs you with its haunting spice box perfume. Its limpid ruby robe beguiles you. Its sweet and creamy sugared beet root flavors romance your mouth. And its finish leaves an indelible impression on your mind. No small wonder, then, that only a precious few bottles are produced each year.

“The DRC produced splendid wines in 1990, and the Richebourg is close to reaching its plateau of maturity. A dark ruby color reveals lightening at the edge. The stunning aromatics offer intense aromas of spring flowers, black fruits, licorice, and toasty new oak. Fleshy and medium to full-bodied, with a velvety-textured palate, and sweet fruit, this smoky, rich, complex red Burgundy can be drunk now and over the next decade.”

– Robert Parker

THE MYSTICAL ABACUS

Abacus is ZD Winery’s ultimate prize, combining the best qualities of an aged wine with the best of a youthful wine, all together in one sumptuous mouthful.

The concept was born on a de Leuze family retreat, when ZD wine master, Robert and his brother, Brett were enjoying a wonderful old Cabernet Sauvignon. What if there was a way to blend the elegance of an older Cabernet Sauvignon with the intensity of fruit found in a younger wine?

Always eager to accept a challenge, wine master Robert de Leuze took on the task of creating such a wine, unlike any other produced in the world. The result is a “solera style” multiple-vintage blend of every ZD Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ever produced, which is held in barrel until bottling.

The first bottling, with the 1992-1998 vintages, was released November 1, 1999. This is the ongoing cycle of the ever-evolving solera; each year Abacus will increase by one vintage, gaining more and more complexity.

Tonight we are pleased to be able to offer you some of this mystical wine.

2007 Abacus, Tenth Bottling

A FABULOUS IMPERIAL OF 2006 MOUTON

We need do no more than cite Robert Parker’s review of this amazing wine:

“A sensational effort, the 2006 Mouton Rothschild exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a classic Mouton perfume of crème de cassis, flowers, blueberries, and only a hint of oak. Dalhuin told me that in whiskey barrel-tasting vintages such as 1989 and 1990, Mouton was aged in heavily-toasted barrels, and they have backed off to a much lighter toast for the barrels’ interior. I think this has worked fabulously well with the cassis quality fruit they get from their Cabernet Sauvignon. The full-bodied, powerful 2006 possesses extraordinary purity and clarity. A large-scaled, massive Mouton Rothschild that ranks as one of the top four or five wines of the vintage, it may turn out to be the longest-lived wine of the vintage by a landslide.”

Signed by Baronness Philippine de Rothschild.

THE MANDES MANDATE

When Palm Beach Wine Auction Chairman, Ted Mandes, wants something, he knows how to get it. One taste of Ed and Trish Snider’s Beau Vigne a few years ago was all he needed before he set out on a personal mandate to obtain as much of this fabulous wine as he could get. In fact, he asked Ed and Trish if they would make a few very special Magnums just for last year’s event. Knowing Ted, he must have made them an offer they couldn’t refuse because they did. And to carry on the tradition, Ted made the ask again for tonight’s event acquiring the 2007 Beau Vigne Reserve Cabernet rated 94+ by Robert Parker.

“The most limited production cuvée (less than 100 cases) is the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Guest Cottage. The most backward and inaccessible of this trio, it is similar to the Reserve, but without as much breadth of flavor and intensity. Nevertheless, it is a terrific Napa Cabernet Sauvignon offering up notes of graphite, black currants, sweet cherries, mocha, spicy wood, and a hint of earth. Give this tannic, structured 2006 three to four years of cellaring, and consume it over the following 20-25 years.” – Robert Parker

A THREE-LITER BOTTLE OF PATZ AND HALL

PISONI PINOT NOIR

“One of the most impressive Burgundian-styled negociant operations in California, the quartet of Donald and Heather Patz, James Hall, and Anne Moses continues to fine tune and improve what were already topnotch wines. Their 2006 Chardonnays represent successes for the vintage. All four 2006 Pinot Noirs are good given the vintage.” – Robert Parker

Pisoni Vineyard is an iconic site, located in the far southern hills of the Santa Lucia Highlands, which run along the western edge of the Salinas Valley in Monterey County. Situated on a long, sloping hillside facing to the east and southeast above the main valley, Pisoni is one of the region’s benchmark vineyards. The Santa Lucia Highlands is a cool area, perfect for the unique clone of Pinot Noir grown by Gary Pisoni. Gary is one of California’s most gifted winegrowers, and this vineyard has a well-deserved reputation for producing world-class Pinot Noir grapes. The original planting of Pinot Noir took place in the early 1980s, and we are fortunate to source our fruit from rows that have been set-aside for us in the coveted “old field” at Pisoni.

THE LEGENDARY 2000 MOUTON

She has exceeded everyone’s expectations with a work of art. Those who have seen the extraordinary packaging of the 2000 Mouton Rothschild must certainly realize this is a brilliant achievement. The bottle is extraordinary, and likely to have nearly as much value empty as full! Her genius is obvious, but it’s what’s inside that counts!” – Robert Parker

LOUIS XIII RÉMY MARTIN GRANDE CHAMPAGNE COGNAC

It took thousands to crown Louis XIII King of France. More than four centuries later, a single bottle of the cognac that bears his name still requires nearly 10,000 individuals to produce.

“Louis XIII is not a Cognac,” they say at Rémy. “Put simply, it’s a moment.” A moment of pleasure fit for a king. Each hand-crafted Baccarat crystal decanter of Louis XIII contains a blend of 1,200 Cognacs, ranging in age from 40 to 100 years old and requiring the combined expertise of three generations of Cellar Masters. A solid gold collar and signature fleur-de-lys crystal stopper adorn every decanter. Its Baroque-style glass and design recall the grandeur of the Baroque era of King Louis XIII, while its noble taste pleases palettes the world over today.

From its form to its finish, Louis XIII Rémy Martin Grande Champagne Cognac is a royal drink indeed.

One Bottle of Louis XIII Grande Champagne Cognac
